Rev. Peggy D. Farris, owner, and President.
Grandmother and Granddad lived on a hill of red clay and sand rock that covered eighty acres in Pottawatomie county, Oklahoma. This farm was heaven to my cousins and me as children. In the front yard of their simple, white stone, rectangle home was a huge, old, Weeping Willow Tree with branches that touched the ground and provided shelter and a playhouse. The branches swayed with the slightest breeze. When Oklahoma winds blew harder, we heard it through those soft leaves. We heard Mocking Birds pretending to be every bird in the area. One bird kept singing its song, so I whistled back, “Bob, Bob, white.” The birds answered.
When I decided to open my first studio, and gallery in 1981, I searched for a name for the corporation that meant something to me, not use a catchy name that stood out but one that had a meaning. I remembered how great I felt as a child under those protective leaves and limbs of that old Weeping Willow Tree and so I incorporated my studio as Whispering Willows LTD. Co.
Through this organization, I taught lessons, published mystery magazines, wrote a syndicated newspaper column, painted and sold to corporations as well as individuals, and I painted on consignment.
After entering the ministry on January 1, 2001, I dissolved the corporation. However, the studio continued as the years passed even through my service as Senior Minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). After retiring from the ministry on March 1, 2017, I established a new corporation that I named, Whispering Willows Art Gallery, LLC. My Art Gallery will open in October of 2017 at 226 East Main Street, Norman Oklahoma.
This gallery will display my paintings but also, I have five contract artists that will show their art and two guest artists that will show their works for the first month. There will be a gift shop where the artists may sell their smaller works of art as well as other items. There is a conference room for meetings and seminars. In the back is the classroom available to art teachers to teach art classes for adults and children. We will offer opportunities for consultation for works on consignment. We will have a special art showing highlighting different artists every March, June, September, and December. My vision is for Whispering Willows Art Gallery to be a Center for Creativity and Inspiration.
Whispering Willows Art Gallery will be a place where artists gather to present their work, learn and share with each other, and be part of an energetic art community. This organization would be a safe place where artists are respected and encouraged.
To grow into a respected place of art and a center for creativity and inspiration.
